I have downloaded aload of new login screens (loginui.exe) but I can not get it to install everytime I overwrite the one in system32 the original is copied straight back over. same with the windows xp startup screen. I have installed style xp but still can not get them to install any help please.

i dunno why it didnt worked for you
i installed the latest StyleXP (version 1.01L) and in the Logon page, i clicked add new logon, and browsed for the logonui.exe and also renamed it to a new name and clicked apply. it simply worked for me
