Scientists have set a new internet speed record by transferring 6.7 gigabytes of data across 10,978 kilometres (6,800 miles), from Sunnyvale in the US to Amsterdam in Holland, in less than one minute
Man would those speeds be nice.

 Oh MAN!
Using a quantity of data equivalent to two feature-length DVD-quality movies, the transfer was accomplished at an average speed of more than 923 megabits per second, or more than 3,500 times faster than a typical home broadband connection.
Thank you. I find this very interesting and lets just say, I'm VERY jealous.

Damn!! How many times faster is that that OS12, or what ever it is? The firberoptic connection? Hell i would be happy with a constant 1 mg up and down. but 993 mg would be awesome!!

um Bull Shit:
OC256: 13.271 Gbps
That is a shit load faster than only 923 megabits per second.
That connection they are using is just over an OC12 but still not quite even an OC24 which is 1.244 Gbps.
And you still have an OC48 @ 2.488 Gbps.
So the fastest connection is an OC256. Public anyways. :P
Anyways Clemson University is working on a connection that can download the complete Library of Congress faster then you can click your mouse (1 click...average a human being can click one time).
Just the Printed collection of the U. S. Library of Congress is 10 Terabytes. That is 1,099,511,627,776 Bytes (8 bits).
lol Now that is fast.
However, one day you should be able to download a Yottabyte in less than a sec.
That's 1,208,925,819,614,629,174,706,176 bytes. Thats around 10 E24.
If you had a hard disk that could hold that much data it could contain these and a shit load more:
3 years of EOS data (2001)
All U. S. academic research libraries
1995 production of hard-disk drives
All printed material; 1995 production of digital magnetic tape
All words ever spoken by human beings.
Contents of a large mass storage system
Automated tape robot; all the X-ray films in a large technological hospital; 50,000 trees made into paper and printed; daily rate of EOS (Earth Orbiting System) data (1998)
Academic research ligrary
Printed collection of the U. S. Library of Congress
Paper in the bed of a pickup; symphony in high-fidelity sound; broadcast quality movie
20 yards of books on a shelf
8mm Exabyte tale
Audio collection of the works of Beethoven; five Exabyte tapes; VHS tape used to store digital data
Library floor of books on shelves
Library floor of academic journals on shelves; large ID-1 digital tape

Ummmm... The point in this test, is to do a real transfer, between 2 nodes in the Internet2 network, not how much the teoretichal speed could be.
If you have a point to point OC256, you can not set any speedrecord on the _internet_
Even the fastest connection has its weak links, and those weak links will slow down your transferspeed.
One of the reasons for building the Internet2 network used setting this record,
is all the weak links and slowdowns in todays Internet.
