Automated System Recovery

Despite the fact that I used reinstall or install Windows XP/2000 heapsa time, it is just yesterday I realised there is an option to press F2 and start Automated System Recovery (ASR) during the Windows 2000/XP installation setup.

ASR is a two-part system of recovery: ASR backup and ASR restore. The backup portion is accomplished through the ASR Wizard located in Backup. The wizard backs up the system state, system services, and all disks associated with the operating system components. It also creates a file containing information about the backup, the disk configurations (including basic and dynamic volumes) and how to accomplish a restore.

You can access the restore portion by pressing F2 when prompted in the text-mode portion of setup. ASR will read the disk configurations from the file that it creates and restore all of the disk signatures, volumes and partitions on, at a minimum, the disks required to start the computer. (It will attempt to restore all of the disk configurations, but under some circumstances, it might not be able to.) ASR then installs a simple installation of Windows and automatically starts a restoration using the backup created by the ASR wizard.

This looks like promising and would solve most of our system failures, I think
Since I installed Windows 2000 and ran it till Windows XP was released, I got an error message like "ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt" and couldn't log on to Windows. At those times, I had to reinstall Windows to overcome the problem.

I wanna ask to how much has this ASR helped you?

you could install it as an option from the boot menu and it does help you to recover your system.it works fine for me this way,i have never try it from cd though.

The creation of the ASR set is pretty quick and seems to be one of the fastest ways to create a full backup. I have used it and am pleased with the result when restoring. Just remember that you can't change the partion size upon restoration. (Well, it is possible but requires some hacking...)
