Rather than installing the DivX codec, or a large pack of codecs, I would reccommend ffdshow-alpha (search for it on google). It's an open source codec that plays DivX, Xvid, etc.
If the DivX's you are trying to play have AC3 audio, the problem might be with the audio codec... I had this problem once. Get AC3Filter - it seems to work best.
