Olympic computers crash at second hurdle
Half an hour live

ONLY THIRTY minutes into the start of second-round ticket sales, the Olympic Games' computer system crashed.

The system, designed for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, was switched off after Olympic Committee said it needed to improve the technical plan.

The site had a huge number of page visits and was unable to cope. Many people were unable to submit their applications for tickets, the committee said.

The Chinese news site Xinhua reported that there were eight million hits and 200,000 orders per second.

Ticketmaster, which hosts the site, is working on ways to fix the problem. It ran the ticketing plan for 2004 Athens Olympic Games and flogged 119 million tickets without much of a hitch.

More here.
