An easy way to not have to worry it either way ---> Get a legal copy.

Thanks for the update.

While that would seem like a partial solution, Microsofts actions have questionable ethics. Refusing to provide security fixes for unauthorized windows copies will inevitably help the spread of viruses, which will have a bad impact on the users who purchased windows legally, global network traffic, etc.

True. We all assume that every company computer has a legal copy of WinXP. I would bet that's not the case. What if that's a company you gave credit card or personal information to. They will not have the SP2 security update and you know the rest of the story. Not to mention all the bad news about security problems with Windows will not likely fade, like Zone-MR has pointed out above.

But of course this is nothing Microsoft has not already thought about.

Quote:
This actually matches up quite nicely to the initial reports, because they quoted Microsoft group product manager Barry Goffe as saying Microsoft had not "explicitly done anything to SP2 to exclude it from pirated copies", and that: "It was a tough choice, but we finally decided that even if someone has pirated copy of Windows, it is more important to keep him safe than it is to be concerned about the revenue issue... Having these unsecured users means bigger worm and virus outbreaks - which also impacts the Internet and consequently, our legitimate users as well."
...this is why they are known as M$ :P

Actually, Microsoft has not put any disabling ability in the new service pack. The current outlook is that even though someone may be using a pirated version, everyone requires protection from malicious code.

I tested this theory on a spare machine, and the machine is still working.

Furthermore, an email from MS in regards to this situation has been distributed.

Hi,

Well I don't trust M$ for one second.

There is an easy fix to the XP Corp SP2 2126 slipstream CD install.

If this changes prior to the XP SP2 Final release, they have tampered with what they said they wouldn't.

I own 2 XP Home and 2 XP Pro original, genuine and purchased by me versions, but prefer using XP Corp due to the bl??dy activation crap. I simply despise it.

How many times have you had a dud XP install, no idea why, you try activating your XP twice in one day, or 3 times in a month, you can't unless you ring M$ up and get a code to enter.

Hate it, hate it

Cheerz
