I had a similar problem with my HP4200c and there website said I must have the SW already installed in order to use the patch to make my scanner work in XP.
Stupid Idiots, I can't even install the stinkin SW, it says for Win98 only not Win NT

So, what I did was D/L the Win2000 SW and install it, then run the Win XP patch and everything works fine.

So, Maybe you can try the same thing from your scanners website, just look for Win2000 drivers or S/W to D/L.
