Well you could try reinstalling ie6 sp1...
BTW, do you get any error messages or total closing /crash?
Check your host file as well
( X:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\etc )
Do u have
ANY entries in there... that refer to Microsoft or to Akamai? if so DELETE them, save & reboot... or try this one:

In the small box that Opens, type the three letters "cmd"
(without quotes of course) then click the OK button.
In da command prompt window that just opened (black background / white text), {unless u changed the colors}

type the following commands, pressing the ENTER key on your keyboard after each line:
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 msjava.dll (you may not have this one... That's aight)
regsvr32 mshtml.dll
regsvr32 browseui.dll
Now type da word: exit and the window will close.
Now Reboot and try and Microsoft Windows Update again....
still crashes?
Verify that Internet Explorer is configured to use SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0. {advanced tab ie prop page}
or
try unselecting "Check for server certificate revocation" while u are in the advanced tab under ie6 property page, reboot a couple a times or do a
clean reeboooot not basic... Now open Internet Explorer and try the Windows Update site again. still crash?
