svchost.exe NETWORK SERVICE?

Anyone know what svchost.exe NETWORK SERVICE is? It uses 100% cpu and it first uses about 6,000k of memeory and then it just uses more and more the longer it runs. It also freezes everything so nothing works, not even notepad.

Three svchost.exe are running when I use Task Manager. If I close this one everything is fine. So if I close this one two more svchost.exe are running.

Anyone know how to fix this?

In about 5 min it uses 28,000k of memory. Once I close it everything is fine.

it's normal for it to be multiple copies and for it to use a large amount of ram, svchost.exe is a generic process name for a lot of network services, if one of them keeps using up a lot of ram then try messing with your services and see what happens, but it's normal for there to be more than 1 and for them to consume 28 megs of ram, at least

FYI - I have three running - total 23 mbs of RAM, that's normal.
Explorer.exe takes over 34 mbs of RAM.
What I worry about is the CPU figure for the processes, especially
iexplorer.exe.

Well its really ignoring becuase I have to close it every time I restart.

Closing network connections in services does not help either.

I had a similar problem a while a go when I was installing beta builds of Windows XP as they were being released and then the final without reformating and even after that it was still doing it. I think it must have been the order the processes started up. I tried messing with the services for a bit but it didn't help. After a reformat it all worked again though.
I spent a while working out what was wrong because when I started the computer it would seem to have started then I would launch something (happened with almost everything) and nothing would happen. If I just left the computer then after a very long wait it would sudenly come back to life and all the programs would suddenly start up.

After it got stuck if I checked one instance of svchost it would be using all the cpu. After ending 2 certain instances of svchost and then explorer and then ran explorer in the run box it would then usually come back to life straight away so I had to do this everytime I restarted.

I did make the problem go away for a while by optimising the registry which must have changed the order things started up in
Don't know if this problem is related but I thought it might help

I have 5 of them running in mine at a whopping 29 megs total RAM.

But War was not refering to the amount of RAM it was using. If I read his first post correctly, he was refering to it sucking up CPU.


FYI, the reason I have 5 running is because I also run VMware and that has 2 more network connections.

well, i am not running VMWare. but i have 5 svchost.exe running.

SVCHOST.EXE: 1.95 MB
SVCHOST.EXE: 16.9 MB
SVCHOST.EXE: 1.29 MB
SVCHOST.EXE: 1.37 MB
SVCHOST.EXE: 1.38 MB

i just want to know if it is normal. two suspicious things occured in windows during last week, so i am curious.

btw Will, i am 99.9% sure you are not running the same windows u had on September 2002 and hopefully u don't have your problem now.
