Thanks for the replies.
No solution in sight yet, so I've given up on MusicMatch for now... MusicMatch does whiff of bloatware anyway from what little I know, but I never loaded it before... oh well, I may try an older version sometime in Win98. For now, I've decided to use WinAmp for playing mp3's (tried both versions .... I like the new WinAmp3 for its more refined interface).
While I have played around with XP, I don't have it loaded at the moment and so far have no compelling reason to use it on a mainly-for-gaming machine. There are some good reasons not to do so, though:
* XP doesn't completely support my current video or sound card... 3dfx and Aureal are both dead/unsupported now, so eventually I will replace both, but for now I love Voodoo FSAA and A3Dv2 just sounds better than a Soundblaster. It's a Betamax vs VHS thing.
* I already know that XP won't run some older games and I have a pile of them I haven't had time to play yet.
* I've spent many hours assembling a working collection of Win98 customizations and utility software.... not in a hurry to start from scratch again, thanks.
I recently acquired some swappable hard drive trays so I could back up to a removable hard drive instead of burning multiple CD's. I'm now thinking about putting my C: drive in one of them so that I can just plug a different C: drive into the front of the machine to convert it from a Win98 machine to an XP machine... completely separate OS installations rather than a dual-boot setup. I already keep all of my documents on a secondary drive to simplify backups and OS re-installs.
