it is the media encoder !
i doubt you have to select the VOB file showing all files, and browsing for the file when it is in the DVD. there is a Quick Start tab in the media encoder, and there is Encode a film - or somthing like that. i think it is better to have the first shot using that.
as i haven't got a DVD ROM, what i did was, i decrypted a VOB file from my coz and burnt it to a CDRW and brought it here. i got error messages when i tried to convert. i think it is cos it is decrypted or something. i am not sure
