it's working so far. I did notice something. It seems that doing this (with the /s:x:\path) results in integration the same way as executing update.exe with the -s:x:\path, only this time the latter worked. When i executed update.exe, was i just repeating things, or is this a different integration than the first one?

That command is the same you would use with update.exe to integrate into a directory, there should be no difference, it just extracts the files to a random directory and integrates at the same time.
If you don't mind, let me know the ISO file size after you compile with cdimage, and if you get any errors during install like mine posted previously in this thread.
ISO Size: 513 MB (538,687,488 bytes)

Nevermind, it's working OK now. Burning the ISO with Nero Track-At-Once setting was causing the error, Disc-At-Once cured it.

Just burned my CD using Nero.
However early on during installation, as the installer copies setup files to a temporary subdirectory, I run into this error about the installation unable to read or (find?) file mmcbase.dll. I choose 'retry' to no avail. I wouldn't dare choose 'ignore' and continue knowing that the installation is doomed tofail anyway.
It is rather strange because when i manually extract the file mmcbase.dl_ using extract.exe, the file is completely readable.
Am i missing something again?
My PC is a Pentium 3 933MHz 133MHzFSB. not overclocked. 256 MB SDRAM. DVD-ROM drive on Secondary Master.

you should always choose to 'disk at once' to create bootable CDs
