Anyone have this? or know how good/bad it is?
My mom is wanting ot buy a computer for her this week. And one of the 1st things I have to do *asap* is get a network up so she can use the cable internet we have. ;). But...no way are we (bro and I) gonna wire the house w/ cat5. Too much trouble for one drop. So i was thinking either wireless, or over the phone network. Any input? A pair of those Anypoints go for about 50 on ebay. |
I have an Orinoco wireless system, and, while it's not the best that can be bought (but free through the job), the whole wireless concept is the greatest thing ever.
It is SO much worth a little extra money than the pain of having to run wiring throughout an entire house. And, with the laptop, it is the greatest thing ever that I can be surfing at cable speeds sitting outside on the porch. I would check the reviews for the various wireless products (though I think Intel's work well) , but if you have to decide between over phone network or wireless, go for wireless. |
can u point me in the direction of that orinoco?
|
Oh don't buy the Orinoco, it's made by Lucent (which will probably go under soon) and has the crappiest documentation and setup software ever. The reason I love it so much is that 1. I didn't have to set it up, and 2. It was free.
On another note, you can navigate to this link /http://computers.cnet.com/hardware/search/1,10121,0-1037-401-0,00.html?tag=lnav-wireless&srch&qt=wireless&cn=Networking&ca=1037/ where CNet lists many wireless products. Basically, all of them are going to function at the same speed, you just need to decide which one based on price and other functionalities. |
ahh..
Free = good. :D Send me a free pair :-D |
LOL, so many people have asked me that.
|
yeah..but i'm the only one ur gonna send a free pair too right?? :D :D
j/k... |
Linksys actually has some great wireless networking options to choose from. check them out at [link]www.linksys.com.[/link] Currently, me&my dad's computer are sharing out the cablemodem with CAT5 wires across the hall, but someday in my lifetime, I'd like to go wireless as well, and I'll probably choose Linksys products because we're using one of their routers to share the cable connection right now, works well too :-)
|
yeah..but those are all exnepisve.
and we cant go wired like u. we're on opposite sides of the house. Those usb ones that are on ebay..here's a link [link]http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2029515904[/link] i know 1.6Mbps is pretty slow. But...its not *THAT* slow right? I mean...i dont even think my cable is 1.6Mbps. I think its like 1.5ish. I only get liek 120KBps downloads. So....1.6Mbps (probably more like 400kbps) to my mom isnt that bad right? Yes? can anyone explain it? |
Hi Folks, this whole Issue has been very extensively knocked around for several years at [link]www.dslreports.com[/link] which has to be the best Forum/Info. source in this area around. Well worth a Look and many happy hours of Reading..... :D
|
yeah...read that a while go..too long..too boring.
Why dont u summarize? :) what about this lil kit? [link]http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2028689969[/link] |
Hmmm....well after working with "Wireless" communication for over 3 years now, the best Summary that I can come up with is "There are NO simple Answers".... ;)
|
if linksys is too expensive, than yeah i'd go with Intel products. I don't know much about the details of setting it up, etc....than again I hear much of it is simply plug n play.
|
alright well.
When buyin the ocmputer..i saw the Intel USB Phoneline AnyPoint networkin things for $30 each. SO...picked up a pair. By 1:45 the system was up and running a fresh install of XP Pro on NTFS (none of this HOME on FAT32 nonsense for this family :D) By 5:00pm (this post)...everything works smooooothly. my computer can access the net perfect. my moms can access the net perfect w/ reasonable speeds. If this comp isnt downloading, that computer can still download at a good 100KBps or so (downloaded some 14MB drivers) as opposed to the 120KBps here. So... a loss of 20KBps seems ok to me, right? After A LOT of tweaking. I got the network up too. So we can share files and this printer. So....it all works. :) thanks ;edit; spoke to soon. Ok...this keeps happening. IE cant go to websites over there sometimes. This computer is fine everything. over there, AIM connects fine. I'm using a Proxy server I found at [link]www.analog-x.com[/link] It works at times. Any ideas how to make it work all the time? Is there another proxy server i should use? I dont really wanna use XPs internet sharing cuz thats all complicated..haha..like this stuff isnt :-D |
get rid of the proxy software. WindowsXP automatically sets up and configures network settings. The proxy software probably conflicts with XP's native drivers, etc. And for that matter, don't use proxy settings at all.......connect directly instead. Use the networking wizard that comes with XP. Don't be scared to use it, or think its too complicated. Its setup so that a little child could do it. Just follow the instructions, and answer a few questions.
|
I know, that networking wizard actually works remarkable well (one of the few things in XP that did exactly as advertised).
|
hmmm.......ok. I tried that, but it didnt really work. It freaked out all the time.
Do i have to make a disk when it asks me to? I'll do that tomorrow again, when i have all day. |
make sure both computers are on the same domain name, for example, "MSHOME" are what me&my dad are on and we can see each others computer just fine. Also, not sure if it'll help, but try turning off the ICF(Internet connection firewall) on both PC's. If both computers are running XP, making a networking disk should not be necessary. Only if one of the computers have W2K or previous on them, than yes.
|
yeah...well right now as it stands
seeing the computers is fine, no problems. its just the internet doesnt wanna connect at times. AIM will connect generally all the time. |
I sure do like my LinkSys 4 port wireless. Money well spent. Makes life so nice having the wireless laptop downstairs.

Go to this site
_http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/ that has very etensive info there |
