Anyone have this? or know how good/bad it is?

My mom is wanting ot buy a computer for her this week.
And one of the 1st things I have to do *asap* is get a network up so she can use the cable internet we have. .

But...no way are we (bro and I) gonna wire the house w/ cat5.
Too much trouble for one drop. So i was thinking either wireless, or over the phone network.

Any input?
A pair of those Anypoints go for about 50 on ebay.

I have an Orinoco wireless system, and, while it's not the best that can be bought (but free through the job), the whole wireless concept is the greatest thing ever.

It is SO much worth a little extra money than the pain of having to run wiring throughout an entire house. And, with the laptop, it is the greatest thing ever that I can be surfing at cable speeds sitting outside on the porch.

I would check the reviews for the various wireless products (though I think Intel's work well) , but if you have to decide between over phone network or wireless, go for wireless.

Oh don't buy the Orinoco, it's made by Lucent (which will probably go under soon) and has the crappiest documentation and setup software ever. The reason I love it so much is that 1. I didn't have to set it up, and 2. It was free.

On another note, you can navigate to this link
/http://computers.cnet.com/hardware/search/1,10121,0-1037-401-0,00.html?tag=lnav-wireless&srch&qt=wireless&cn=Networking&ca=1037/

where CNet lists many wireless products. Basically, all of them are going to function at the same speed, you just need to decide which one based on price and other functionalities.

Linksys actually has some great wireless networking options to choose from. check them out at [link]www.linksys.com.[/link] Currently, me&my dad's computer are sharing out the cablemodem with CAT5 wires across the hall, but someday in my lifetime, I'd like to go wireless as well, and I'll probably choose Linksys products because we're using one of their routers to share the cable connection right now, works well too :-)

yeah..but those are all exnepisve.

and we cant go wired like u.
we're on opposite sides of the house.

Those usb ones that are on ebay..here's a link
[link]http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2029515904[/link]

i know 1.6Mbps is pretty slow. But...its not *THAT* slow right?
I mean...i dont even think my cable is 1.6Mbps. I think its like 1.5ish. I only get liek 120KBps downloads.
So....1.6Mbps (probably more like 400kbps) to my mom isnt that bad right?
Yes?

can anyone explain it?
