hey pplz.

im buying a firewall and i want to know which is the best firewall out there now!?

the on that is easiest to use and catches all hackers??

is it black ice? is it norton?

what is it?!!

unicorn 6th Oct 02 11:12 AM

It's like asking what ftp-server is the best... or what editor is the one to go for...
I use Agnitum Outpost Pro and I like all the options you have to configure it for every and each app. Then it might not be the easiest one. Norton is often claimed to be easy to use but then a lot of people say it's hard to configure for special tasks (like running it in conjunction with a ftp-server at other ports than 21). ZoneAlarm is popular too. Choosing a free version of Kerio should give you a lot of bucks for the money.
Does this make any sense?

BOOMSHOT 6th Oct 02 11:18 AM

Kerio Personal firewall is the best way to go...and its free...after installing...check it at /www.grc.com using their sheilds up feature...

U can get Kerio at /www.kerio.com

I have tried almost all the rest...Norton, Zonealarm, Sygate Pro etc.

U won't regret it ;) :) :D

crooked_letter 6th Oct 02 11:27 AM

kerio? okay then
well

anymore comments on kerio!?!? i have downloaded it... is it the best??

also one thing. i dont mind paying money for a firewall if its better than other firewalls..... so yep.

<kerio downloaded> ;)

crooked_letter 6th Oct 02 11:33 AM

urgh  .......... kerio is a lil hard to understand.....

is there anything better and EASIER to use?

Server 6th Oct 02 02:01 PM

ZoneAlarm seems to work pretty smooth for me . I know they have a free
version so give a try before you buy... B)

crooked_letter 6th Oct 02 02:18 PM

ok mad..

anyone had any problems with ZoneAlarm???

is it easy to use?

crooked_letter 6th Oct 02 02:32 PM

ALSO! i have found black ice and its working really well :) but, i just wanna know if black ice actually blocks the hackers or just detects them....

What is the difference between black is protection and black ice defender ;) ;) ;)

griz 6th Oct 02 03:27 PM

I use Zone Alarm and have had no probs at all. Fairly easy to set up after first install. After that you just give permissions to the various programs as required. ...griz ;)

Just put McAfee firewall on & it look very good. I have used Zone & McAfee looks as good. The trace option on McAfee is v good.

crooked_letter 7th Oct 02 01:23 AM

hmmm, so people......

ZONE OR MCAFFE?

what do some of the 'experts' think??

Berlin2 7th Oct 02 01:42 AM

Try both, separately, & see what u think. I used Zone for a long time. Now I will try McAffee for a while. These products are good enough for individual users, imho, altho it always possible that a crack in any product will appear in time. Its only software, after all.

DoG 7th Oct 02 02:05 AM

Zone alarm is a joke- Ask just about anyone in the tech comunity. McAffee is OK as are Kerio and Tiny but unfortunately the best firewall (Other than a hardware firewall) is either Norton Personal Firewall, Norton Internet Security on Ymantec Client Firewall. All are fully cutomisable and auto configuring for most of the common internet apps.

Berlin2 7th Oct 02 02:32 AM

well, i am moving in the right direction, from Zone to McAfee. I thought so.

DoG 7th Oct 02 03:28 AM

lol, you could turn zone off and move in the right direction :P

Bads 7th Oct 02 04:37 AM

McAfee firewall Plus and Norton Internet Security are both really good firewall and easy to learn ;)

crooked_letter 7th Oct 02 06:16 AM

i have black ice protection.........

i like it...

it does work properly doesn't it???

Beta Spanky 7th Oct 02 01:51 PM

IMO, Zone Alarm is not a bad beginning firewall. It is very easy to set up, and is very user friendly. As far as it being a joke, a little fact would be nice before that general statement is made. Just saying it is a joke is not very informative.

BlackIce on the other hand is NOT a firewall. BlackIce is an intrusion detection software. Meaning it will monitor any and all traffic coming into your computer, but it will not monitor any outbound traffic. Therefore it is not a good solution to a firewall.

ZoneAlarm monitors both inbound and outbound traffic. The reason you want outbound traffic monitored is for the protection against trojan horses and such.

Hope some of that info is helpful.

Also, a good site to help you with Kerio, which is a good firewall.

Actually Black-Ice versions 3.5 will monitor outgoing connections.

I didn't know that Dave. That is good to know.

I guess when a company misrepresents their software as being something it is not, a person tends not to ever go back and see if they have changed.

Norton Personal Firewall 2003 is a fine app to protect from hackers. it gives you an option to scan for internet enabled programs in your hard drive and lets you to choose which programs you wanna allow them to access the internet. so you no need to bother of allowing to each and every program to protect from the internet. i couldn't find a similar option in McAfee Firewall yet. If u r using Nortan AntiVirus 2003, it well intergrates with the virus scanner as well. Compatibility with windows xp is excellent and proves it is stable under the operating enviornment. so i use Norton Personal Firewall 2003 and Norton AntiVirus 2003

There is nothing in this discussion that make me even consider to leave Outpost.

I also start to understand why this question always make people going and create long threads... And I believe it can be both entertaining and educating at the same time.

You see, to me everything Norton (except the non-Norton-origin Ghost) is a joke.

The option McoreD mentions for example is a quite useless one. For example I want Internet Exploded to be able to visit the Net. This doesn't mean I wan't it to visit Microsoft Search at MSN. Iwant to check my ISPs homepage every now and then, but I don't want my ISP to check my ftp-server. You get it? The list can be mighty long with exceptions and there will never be such easy solutions as "enable a list of apps and be set".

Integrating with a viiri-scanner? Is that amazing or is it only something Norton/Symantec points at to make uncertain users convinced that here is an excellent product with features you don't dare saying No thanks to?

May it even be as so often - it's a question of personal taste mixed with common sense?

i uninstalled all the firewalls,
it was hell annoying :D :D
