Please Note that this problem is for Advance users inly :P
I have a computer (duh) thats running win 98 SE on it. and a laptop running windows 98 on it. now i'm trying to do a cable connect with the 2. ie: from one printer port on LPT1 to the laptops printer port on LPT1. The problem is this. I start the host on the laptop. start the guest on the desktop. It says its verifying users, and it then verifies. then it sits for a while. pops up a window, asks for the computer name, and when i type in the computer name, it says it can't find it. I shared a folder on the hard drive of the host pc, and still no go. help me. thanx |
I didn't even think there was a way to network computers using the printer ports!

Why not just use ICS???? or a router?? |
i've heard of doing it with printer ports but have never tried it.
|
I've tried this already but on both Windows 98SE OS, and yes there some kind of synchronization of both pc, but when connected hell! its very very slow... transfering big data. good for copying small files only.
|
On pricewatch: Hub, cables, 2 nics=$15, if you want i will loan it to you...LOL
|
Yea, zonko...but having the "speed" and novelty of using the printer ports is "priceless".

And what speed? ecperez said it would be slow as hell. Why would ya wanna waste your time?? not trying to slam ya, but.....? peACe! :o |
we used to do that 'back in the day'
to play games like diablo. hehe :). Its called Direct Cable Connect. U could go through LPT or Serial ports. I dont remember how to fix ur problem though..sorry. I'm sure we encountered it...just cant remember how to get past it. "On pricewatch: Hub, cables, 2 nics=$15, if you want i will loan it to you...LOL " But ones a laptop...so it'd be more, because he'd have to get a PCMCIA nic. |

jes. the laptop also has a printer port (LPT1) so there is no reason for the network card. the reason i'm doing this is to transfer 100's of .txt files over to the laptop. and just under 1000 MIDI files. so they are small, and I got the cable for free ;) so its not such a big deal. But i will have a look at your links and i will let you guys know what happens.
thanx B) |
hi
had the same problem years ago, as i remember it is to do with processor speed. i was connecting one fast computer and one slow one, it seemed to matter which was host and which was slave try changing that round on the two computers Last edited by tony adams at Today at 10:07 am |
Tony: you're right... I tried connecting a P-II 350 MHz to an old 486 and it worked but there was something weird in it  ...
MO: are you sure you are using the correct type of LPT cable ? ;) Check this: _http://www.hardwarebook.net/cable/index.html The cable you need for connecting that way is the LapLink/InterLink cable. |
hey. could it be the fact that i'm connecting a p4 1.6 gHz to a p1 120 mHz?
ha ha ha.   but the cable is correct. and i will try the switching between the host and guest around. thanx |
oops

To insure better speeds, make sure your LPT ports are set up as EPP ( Bi-Dir )
and that your cable supports all 8 bits at the time.. |

In Direct Cable Connection, it does not matter for the different speed of your 2 computers. Even though hub/nic are not expensive, I am still using Direct Cable Connection to connect my old laptop (without network adaptor) to my Desktop PC during replying this PM! Lol... |

It's better off to go to the computer show, get 2 used EtherLink cards, for $10 bucks and a small hub for $20 bucks and 2 10- ft of wire for a good $15 bucks and then u are all set. Did u know? U can use 1 modem (56K) or DSL line on one computer and u can connect the other computer with an network line using a proggie called "PPPshar lite" http://www.pppindia.com/intl/pppshar/ This stuff works great! even if have kids playing or doing one PC and u need to get online. Try it! I love it B) Wile' :D |
when you enter the computer name do you put
computer or \\computer ? |
And just out of curiosity did you go into add windows components and add direct connect?? It is in there and it should help you configure everything
|
1: computer name was insterted as
computer name and not \\computer name secondly: yes i did install direct cable connect from add/remove proggies... but still no go...I've decided to quit the whole process, gonna get me another network card instead.....besides, Direct cable is crap slow THANX TO EVERYONE FOR THE HELP APPRECIATE IT I declare this post closed.... thanx again |
Post closed Mo man... :)
