Hi there peeps,

I have a question about Windows update on WIN98.

Let me explain what the setup is before I ask. My wife and I went to her doctor today to check up on the status of our baby to be born soon. He said he had problems with his PC trying to dial into the internet all the time. It sounded simple enough to fix, but when I tried go set his dialup connection properties I saw that he doesn't have any dialup connection under "Dialup Networking". Then with asking a few quistions I found that they hava a small network running. It is 3 computers linked up and the ISDN modem setup on a server based PC. I went to that PC to see what the properties of the dialup connection is, just to see that there aren't any. The lady then showed me that she had a Webbased (Meaning you use IE explorer to set and check your status of the connection) dialup network setup, which I haven't seen before. Ok that is the background of their setup.

The problem is that it seems that his PC enables the ISDN connection ramdomly and they had to unplug the ISDN BOX so that his PC doesn't connect and run his phone bill up. He said he thinks it's windows update that does it, but I can't remember where to set Windows Update on 98 not to update. But what I did do is to disable his "Scheduled Tasks". There weren't anything in there that was set. So I'm not to sure if this was the reason.

So now I need your help. I hope I made sense trying to explain.

Thanx Guys
Cheers

Have you looked in Control Panel? There should be something like Automatic Updates. Also check if there is some antivirus that checks for updates.

Yeah I have checked the Control panel, couldn't find anything in there. I know you can set XP like that. The Anti Virus software has been set not to auto update.

Thnx for your reply....

i can't remember for sure how to fix this, but i had the same problem on my network for a while. i think on the pc with the ISDN connection you should be able to find some kind of check box you can disable that says something like allow network users to auto-dial or something. this will be under the ISDN connection properties or the network properties. i'll try to find more info for you, i just don't have 98 infront of me right now so i can't really remember.

If you have Internet Explorer 4.x or higher installed, follow these steps...

1. Click on the Start button
2. Highlight Settings in the start menu
3. Click on Control Panel
4. Double-click on the Internet Options icon
5. Click on the Connections tab
6. Click "Never dial a connection"
7. Click the OK button
let me know if that doesn't work, it might not if windows update is the thing causing the problem. i dunno

Hey buddy, thanx for the reply.

I did go there and wanted to go set it there, but since there isn't any connection in the "Connection Tab" list box can't you set anything. It's greyed out.

It does via IE explorer normally and I think via scheduled tasks.

It is possible that something else is causing it. I was thinking about some addware could be doing it. I will have to check that out.

But I'm sure someone in B1 could shed some more light on this.
