just came across this one, havent tried it but.....
- open file #1 in virtual dub
- virtualdub v1.4.8 will give you a warning if the audio stream is
variable bit rate (vbr). if this shows up, you will have to
recompress the audio. skip down to AUDIO COMPRESSION for
modifications to these instructions for compressing audio.
- determine total length of movie in seconds
- determine audio bitrate (i do this through properties window on
the file from explorer)
- using 700,000 kB as the size of one cd, divide by total length
of the movie in seconds to get overall kbps rate
- subtract audio bitrate from overall kbps rate to find video rate
in kbps. it is a good idea to choose a slightly smaller number
- go to video | compression...
- select DivX ;-) MPEG-4 Low-Motion, DivX Codec 4.01, or something similar
- click configure
- set video rate to the number calculated above
- leave all other options default
- go to file | save as avi...
- save as a new file--you can choose "add operation to job list
and defer processing" if you want to queue up a bunch of
compressions and let them all go at once (go to file | job
control... to start them)
- repeat previous steps for file #2 (use the same video bitrate
as for file #1)
- once at least one of the files is compressed, try to play the
compressed file. often times the video will play rather slow
while the audio plays at correct speed. if this happens i am
not sure what to do--the movie is not compressable in this way
- once both files are compressed and confirmed to work properly,
original files can be deleted
- open compressed file #1 in virtual dub
- use file | append avi segment... to add file #2 onto the end of file #1
- go to video menu and choose direct stream copy
- go to file | save as avi... and save the entire movie. this job
will not take nearly as long as the video compression since it
is just copying
- now the movie should fit on one cd!
* AUDIO COMPRESSION
- this is necessary if you have vbr encoded audio. make sure the
file is open in virtualdub
- go to audio and select full processing mode
- go to audio | conversion...
- at the bottom left of the window that comes up, it will display
required bandwidth. the recompressed audio will have the same
quality as long as it is compressed with a bitrate at least as
high as this number, so remember it and click cancel or ok
- go to audio | compression...
- select MPEG layer-3 compression and then select a bitrate which
at least as large as the minimum bandwidth from before
- use this audio bitrate when calculating the video bitrate
