I have recently discussed this with many people in the IRC channel but would like everyone's opinion on this. I am considering the possibility of using a custom coded IRCd to host the channel and the possibility of creating an open network offering a convenient place for all beta-related sites to host their IRC channels.
This will create the following advantages:
* Creating a centralised meeting point for all beta sites will bring in new users and help make the IRC system much more active.
* New modes - channel admin - like op but prefixed in nick list with an * not a @. Halfop, prefixed with a % and just like op with the exception they cant deop/kick/ban ops.
* Full control over the server, various levels of IRCops etc.
* I can code it to automatically mark nicks who are idle with different prefixes so we know who is away etc...
Dissadvantages:
* Uptime might be a problem however not a major one as I think I can get two servers on reliable locations which should suffice for a small net like the planned one.
* Leaving behind IRC2. Although the new server offers many advantages ill still miss people like derfy
Tell me what you think about it!
The chan is a democracy and I wont do anything w/o agreement from the majority. So far people generally like the idea...
Please tell me what you think...
