Hello all

I have read that in order to transfer video from a DV cam (which I have) to a pc all you really need is firewire ports on both ends and the software of course. I was wondering how valid that is and if any of you have had success in this method or what methods you may use. Thank you all very much for any help you may give; I value your opinions.

TIA

/JD

I have just recently purchased a DV camcorder (JVC) with the same intention.

The proccess is very easy. I purchased a firewire card (PCMCIA as im using it mainly on my laptop). The card came with a standard cable, one end goes into the card, and the other end is the standard small connector you will find on your camera. I just used the software supplied with the card for video editing, and everything worked out of the box.

What specs you got on the laptop? Just wondering if a 1ghz processor can handle the video ok

And also if an onboard 1394 port will work as good or should I just get get a card?

Thanks matey

My laptop is an old IBM Thinkpad, 650MHz PIII, 128MB RAM. And it could handle capturing the video without any problems whatsoever. Obviously rendering transitions etc took longer than it would on a faster computer but thats to be expected.

And a built in firewire port would obviously be more conveniant, so there should be no reason to get a card. Just get a Firewire -> DV cable. If my laptop managed to capture the video at full res in real time w/o dropping frames, anything can.
