We're likely to see a major announcement from Rambus and SIS next week, as four channel, 9GB/s 1200MHz RDRAM hits the streets.
As well as Rambus and SIS, other partners involved in the announcement include Samsung, the biggest manufacturer of RDRAM memory, and massive motherboard company Asus.
The chipset SIS will introduce is the 659, which will be aimed at a performance sector of the marketplace.
SIS believes that although RDRAM memory is a niche marketplace, there's an opportunity for it to make money in this sector, particularly as the Intel 850e chipset will be displaced by Springdale and Canterwood chipsets any month now.
Yesterday we reported that SIS was being instructed to get out of the low end of the chipset market by its new UMC bosses. There's only deep carnage at that end of the market, anyway.
