Well, this is an interesting turn of events. My computer must decide it doesn't want to do anything anymore and it just reboots itself. I can just be sitting here doing nothing but a download and listening to winamp and it reboots. Hasn't ever done it except for today. Has happened 3 times in the last 4 hours.

Have done NOTHING to the system as far as updates, uninstalls, installs, etc. within the last day or so.

No warning, nothing. Just reboot. Am not sure, but think a HDD is to blame. Though, is supposed to be new. Any good/fast was to make an image of it and put to another drive? (have a couple i could use).

Thanks.

Indy

If you have Norton Ghost, that would be a good way to "clone" your hard drive. Have you unchecked the "Automatic Restart" box in System Props -> Advanced -> Startup and Recovery settings? Maybe instead of your computer restarting, it will give you one of its lovely blue screen of deaths and you can find out exactly what is causing it to restart. Another option is to check your event viewer to try and look for what causes these random restarts. Could be video drivers, who knows.

Thanks Will give those a try. Someone suggested that it might need to be scandisked. It's finding missing clusters and trying to write to them. When it tries, it restarts instead of doing it...?? Guess I'll find out.

Well, on the BSOD it says...

Kmode_exception_not_handled

then the file is

classpnp.sys

Any ideas? I think I'm just going to reformat.

Found some info. here if anyone is interested.

Seems to be an issue related to the Maxtor ATA Promise controller. I have been trying various fixes for it and will let y'all know what works; so if anyone else has this problem. Maybe it'll help.

Ok. Have it fixed.

It was a driver problem on my Maxtor ATA100 controler. By installing the updated driver for the card, all seems ok. If anyone else has this problem, let me know and I can point you in the direction of the driver; or ftp it to you.

You and me both. Had to put a timer next to the computer for 50 min. So I could save before BSOD...
