hi guys
happy new year.. i am loaded with tlots of problem . I have Win ME. my CD Drive is Samsung 52x .when ever i try to copy a file it is taking my machines Full Resource..using CPU for 100%.
MY Machine Config is

P 4 1.7 GHz
40 GB Hdd
52x Samsung CD Rom Drive
16x HP CD Writer

can any one help on this

This should Probably be in hardware trouble, but here are a couple of Ideas...

Are you saying that when you try and copy a file from a CD in the Samsung, that it uses all resorces ?

If so, how are the drives attached, I mean, on IDE1 you should have your Hard drive on the primary and the Samsung on the secondary

On IDE2 you should have your burner on the primary

you may also try to enable OR diable DMA on the drive that is giving you trouble

thanks for the reply. i am sure it uses the 100% resource of the CPU. i am not sure ant the IDE CAbles
will hae to check at home..i am at work right now

other than what BIGHEADover said, the only thing i can think of is to check for new drivers for your motherboards IDE controller, or uninstall and reistall the cdrom and reenable DMA

Moving this. To Win ME, but if this goes on like this maybe even over to hardware support

As already suggested try to enable the DMA first and see if it stays on after a reboot.

Also make sure your not in DOS compatibility mode and using the disk cache.
Control panel\system\performance.
It should state 32bit file system and optimal performance.

Then click the button "File System" and under the hard drive and CD-Rom tabs the cache size should be slid up all the way to the right.

BTW how do i enable the DMA? In my Old PC I dont think i've done this by my machine seems to be working fine. it was a PII machine

go into device manager, then the properties of your hdd / cdrom, i believe then settings, and check the box labeled DMA something or another, been a long time since i've used win9x

Or:
Try to disable system restore and pchealth. My old comp used 100% on every file task when system restore was enabled.

thanks for your replies. I havent had time to check thje cable settings as my work is pretty tight.
I have disabled System Restore . When i try to enable the DMA it gives a message like this .."Enabling DMA will not make the drive work propely" not sure about the message
