Guys, this has been in my head for a long time.

Even though my CDROM is a 52X one (max 7800bytes/sec), why is it at about 2500bytes/sec all the time. It surely can't be something wrong with the CDROM, can it? Is Windows making him slow. All the CDROMs I've seen ork at that speed. Then what is the purpose of buying CDROMs with higher read speed?

If there's any program that can make CDROMs read CDs faster, then let me know

What cable type are you using?

And also, do you have DMA enabled? Enabling that allows direct transfer from memory to your writer without the CPU getting involved - it just might get things a bit quicker for you.

I was just about to ask this question in BetaONE

Can you please tell me as well, how to enable DMA in Windows XP?
The Nero Burning ROM's Nero Info Tool shows my CDRW is DMA Off....

I know how to make it enable in Windows 98. But that way is not possible in Windows XP....

Click on the transfer mode box to select between PIO mode and DMA mode. Choose DMA mode to enable DMA mode for your hard disks and CD-ROM. The Current Transfer Mode box indicates whether DMA mode has been enabled for your IDE devices or not!!!!

Still after enabling DMA, I couldn't get the optimum performance.
I could copy a 187MB folder on a CD to the hard disk at below read speeds

40X max - 61 seconds
52X max - 49 seconds
(My CDROM can read disks at both these maximum speeds, it's a Sony CDU5211)

So that means I only could achieve 3MB/sec and 3.8MB/sec instead of 6MB/sec and 7.8MB/sec.
If the CD was written in a slow speed, does this slow down the read speed of the CDROM? I
think this might be the case.

Hmmmm?????????????
