It's a weird era for PC audio. Gaming, movies, music, and anything that makes noise on your PC might be doing so through any number of standards; Dolby's suite of surround sound, DTS, the various EAXes, OpenAL…we're in the midst of a glorious mishmash of aural enhancements.
How you listen is also part of the equation: headphones or speakers? Analog or digital? How many channels? And, of course, what operating system is your PC running? While Windows Vista has turned out to be very gaming friendly, it threw a wrench into the machinery by doing away with some now-legacy DirectSound standards—and even forcing Creative Labs to release a sort of kludge to make older EAX games work.
