After almost twenty years running Motorola microprocessors on its Macintosh desktops, Apple will switch to IBM chips. Macs will run just released 64-bit IBM PowerPC 970 chips, originally directed to the server market.
Even though Apple had said in the past that performance has not much to do with mega- or gigahertz, the fact is that the fastest Motorola chip runs at 1.25GHz only, while the fastest Pentium 4 runs at 2.8GHz.
IBM PowerPC 970, which will be available next year only, will run at 1.6GHz to 1.8GHz. It runs 32- or 64-bit software with no need for emulation.
