Don't buy those workstations just yet. A 1MB P4? Maybe

IF YOU'RE THINKING of buying a workstation right this minute ? like for example the one that the New HP launched yesterday ? can we humbly suggest that you wait a little while longer.
Because motherboards using the Intel Placer and Plumas 333 chipsets are currently being manufactured and it won't be long until various firms are ready to go-go with the updated technology for Pentium 4 Xeons.

Sources tell the INQ that major partner Supermicro, for instance, is set to release a raft of products using the Placer chipset towards the end of October or in early November.

We also saw Tyan boards using the Placer and the Plumas 333 chipset when we were at the Intel Developer Forum just a few weeks ago.

Placer machines are also likely to find their, err, place in Dell Precision 540 workstations ? and these are probably due to be released sometime in November.

And Broadcom, which as you will recall makes ServerWorks chipsets, also has an updated version of its HE-SL-W offering with support for AGP and the like in the next six to seven weeks.

And what's this we're hearing that old Intel might release a Pentium 4 with 1MB rather than 512K cache, just in case Hammer looks like it's doing too well in the desktop marketplace?

No doubt HP will also release workstations based on the superior Intel Xeon technology too ? but like we said at the beginning of this scroll, perhaps you should hang fire a bit before placing that order.

For full details of up-and-coming Intel announcements, check out our Chipzilla roadmap page here. In particular, check out this Xeon frequency page, and this article, which gives prices of the 533MHz front side bus Xeons, Granite Bay, and more. µ
