M31 is an unknown quantity at this point
I use XP Home (OEM) set up on NTFS. For the first time in ages I went to save something on a 1.44 disc. I keep getting an error message saying the disc is write protected or the wrong file system? I tried 5 or 6 more discs and still get the same message.

Could anyone offer some advice on this

fares is right; the problem is to seek somewhere else.
XP like all other m$ os's uses fat12 for a floppie. It's only harddrive partitions that are formatted ntfs (except if you use one or another 3rd party trick to format the foppy ntfs).

edit: added the (part).
