How to format a usb HDD?

Dear Friends,
i have bought a new USB 40 GB HDD. It is not formatted. XP detects it and when i try to format it, it has 2 options either to partition as a Primary or extended. Which one should i need to go?

I do not want to Boot from the USB,

any help would be appreciated
