AMD to extend CSIP to servers

WITH SMES very definitely in mind, AMD is set to extend its CSIP (Commercial Stable Image Platform) to servers and workstations on October 2nd 2006, according to Ron Myers, AMD's manager of validated solutions.


The new stable image will initially cover Opteron series 100 processors plus four motherboards from three separate suppliers: - Asus, ECS and MSI.

The objective here is to help AMD's channel partners to more effectively target small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Myers claimed such operations are still being sold DUDs (Dressed Up Desktops) by the opposition.

He argues that rival suppliers either target large enterprises or take a consumer product and make it look like a server. AMD already has several other initiatives in this area.

These include its 'true server motherboard' service which lists recommended motherboards for the Opteron 100 series and its true server motherboard service which recommends 'barebones' servers developed by the likes of Asus, Tyan and Supermicro and aimed at the channel. AMD's European channel marketing manager, Richard Baker, claims that his company had gone from virtually zero market share to 26 per cent of the server market by Q2 2006.
