AMD's 3GHz Opteron signals return to Megahurts Madness
Measuring Opterons in GHz
PR SPINNERS at Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), said that 256 and 856 Opterons are available from stock while a model 156 will be around in 30 days.
The firm majored on the clock speed - 3GHz - something of a departure from its habit of giving chips incomprehensible marketing numbers. That also indicates in large block capital letters it feels it has a performance advantage over its competitor, Intel.
The chips consume 95 watts - AMD said HP and Sun will use it now, while IBM will roll out a workstation in 30 days.
It will be the last of the single core Opterons AMD will offer before everything goes dual core, the firm said. Mentioning, in passing, that AMD had a 12.7 per cent share in server systems in Q4 2005 of 12.7 per cent. Perhaps both Intel and AMD will ditch their antipathy to expressing chip frequency speeds now, so we can back to the good old Megahurts Madness daze.
