THE RECENT PACT BETWEEN MS and Sun has been described in some colourful terms, and some even called it a "deal with the devil".
Well, we have photographic proof that this was so for a while. A reader who doesn't want to be named had Sun drop off two V20z Opteron boxes a while ago to test. This place is a Windows shop, so they dutifully installed that OS on them.
Within hours one of them caught fire. Coincidence? Nope, shortly thereafter, the second one was aflame. By that, I don't mean it crashed or smelled funny, I mean flames and thick black smoke coming from under the heatsink.
Graham Lovell, Senior Director of x64 Servers, Network Systems Group at Sun, said: "In early versions of Sun Fire V20z systems, and in a small number of instances, a visible puff of smoke or odour was observed to be emitted from the system cabinet. "Following those observations, Sun performed a comprehensive failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) to isolate the cause and implemented corrective action. Following implementation of those measures, to our knowledge there have been no further such incidences."
