Which One Do I Need?

I would like to try a version of an operating system other than windows. The problem is windows is all that I am familiar with. So what would be a good OS other than windows that would be almost the same as windows.

Simple
No commands to learn
Easy to install software

I am asking alot here but there are some real informative people here, so your help is needed.

As I am typing this, I am using Mepis 3.3.2 I think that is the version. One of those that run from the cd as not to mess up the file system.....I hope.

I will have to check out BEos.....The easy to learn for an older fart would be for me.

Sometime ago I received a copy of this linux OS system from Poolman and it too loaded all from the OS into memory and was free. It looked like WIndows and was easy to use, but I can't remember the name. No it was not Lindows either!

The version I was using didn't have the correct drivers to run my LAN card so I could access the internet. I know Poolman got it going on several of his systems and even setup the home network.

Are you thinking of Knoppix?

Are there others that are the "live version" so as not to have to install and chance messing up an already working OS?

I still think Xandros is the keenest Linux distribution out there. Easy installation user friendly for old time windows guys.

Is there a version that runs as a "live Version", meaning nothing to install just run from cd till you get the hang of it or decide you don't want it? That way nothing on the HD is messed up or lost. Will have to look into that one.

I just looked on Xandros site, didn't see a complete o/s that runs from one cd. I generally free up some disk space and then have xandros install as a dual boot system. never had any problems since it makes up the requisite partitions and keeps clear of your Windows o/s, as do most LInux systems I've tried.

The big question is what do you want to run on Linux. It is always a little disappointing with Linux because you no longer have the zillions of applications out there than run on Windows.

Thanks...that is what I did was to clean off one of the partitions and install. It sets up the boot options to go into the other os.....whick in my case here is xp. I don't know as to the speed of it yet as it is still installing updates. It seems like it might be rather good for a windows person. Thanks for the info on this os.
