Gout - I Know What It Is Now, Do You?
Well until recently I never knew what this was.
Now after having my first attack, I now know what it is.
Has anyone else here had/have this problem?

yes, I have had it a couple of times in my life...they aren't really sure what causes it, but once you get it, you are prone to get it again in your lifetime...
just take it easy, and it will pass quickly...

I felt it start last Saturday after work. Side note, I walk 5 miles everyday doing my job at work. I know this, because I have wore a pedometer before at work to see for myself. My left foot's big toe was killing me, but I couldn't think of anything I had done to hurt it. Thinking it would get better with rest, I spent all of Sunday with my foot up and in pain. Monday morning it felt somewhat better so I went to work. I still felt pain with every step but, I don't often goto the Dr. as you can tell. The mornings were always really hard. Tuesday I went to work and worked all Tuesday as the pain became worse with every step. Wednesday I worked until just after lunch when I could not take the pain anymore. It felt like the worst zit you could ever have and it was on the ball of my big toe. I could feel my heart beat just from the pain in my toe with no movement.
Many of you already know I drink Budweiser, often a few on a daily basis after work. Since I didn't know what I had or what might be the cause, I continued to eat meat & drink Budweiser after work. With the recent holiday weekend(Memorial Day) I had alot of meat (brats & steak) that I cooked and had frozen. I've spent the days after the holiday eatting all this meat up sometimes for breakfast before work and during lunch. Looking at what helps to cause gout attacks I find that eatting meat often or drinking beer often can cause it. Looking back now it's clear what the cause was. I have found many sources on the web with information about it, but I want to know what you know 1st hand.

well, my dr. had told me diet plays a part in it, but sometimes its something in your genes that makes some folks more prone to it then others...
in your case it sounds like it was definately caused by what you were eating too much of...

I have also had a few attacks recently. I had it in my foot and the pain was so bad that I had to use cruthes for about three days. Also could not sleep as even the bed sheet was to heavy on my foot.
So, yeah, gout is the pits. My friend often gets it and he swears that it is due to beer. So KC, looks like you will have to cut down on the Buds.

I have not had it but some of my friends have and ALL were told it came from the diet and all was told NOT to eat fish anymore. Their doctors all said fish was the worst thing you can eat. So with that being said diet would be the first place to look, cause if you get it one time it will usually return. All of them tried it and each time they would eat fish they would end up seeing the doctor.
Thanks

I have not yet tried eatting fish since my first attack. I have avoided eatting brats and have swiched to Bud Light. Everything I have read about gout since my attack says it's not the alcohol, but rather the yeast in the beer. Of course, Bud Light beer has less yeast in it than regular BUD. Yeast is high in purines which are found in many foods, but more than others. Uric acid comes from the breakdown of purines.
So far I have not had another attack, but I have meds handy just in case.

I have not given up on this topic. I have been doing heavy online research for information daily. I have found many interesting things. One of the big things I have found out is that my 7+ year condition with psoriasis seems to have caused my gout condition, psoriatic arthritis.
Acute psoriatic arthritis can also stimulate a type of gout. Gout is a form of arthritis or inflammation about a joint. The inflammation is caused by excess uric acid in the blood. Attacks occur suddenly and are accompanied by great pain. The big toe is a frequent site. Hyperuricemia (excess uric acid in the blood) occurs in 10-20% of patients with psoriatic arthritis, but classical gout is uncommon. Acute gouty arthritis is usually self-limiting and lasts, untreated, a couple of weeks.
