Microsoft has started to beta test the next revision of Windows Update dubbed v6, or version 6 of the technology. Testing of Windows Update v5 ended late last year and it is now operational for all Windows users.
While Microsoft has remained mum on details regarding Windows Update v6, the company has hinted that the service will eventually cover more products than just Windows.
Initial plans for Windows Update version 5 suggested that it would extend to Office, SQL Server and Exchange. However, Microsoft backed away from the expansion before beta testing began and instead focused on improved patching.
In its current state, Windows Update v6 resembles the current production version (v5) very closely, with only few cosmetical changes.
Oddly enough, access to the beta site is currently not restricted. Be aware though, that accessing it will require you to install an updated ActiveX control; doing so might render you unable to access Windows Update v5!
