Philips latest accomplishment involves the unveiling of its optical disk drive that has the capability of burning and playing the three most commonly used optical disc formats. The disc is capable of burning and playing CDs and DVDs.
The latest Blu-ray technology is being seen as a boost for the Blu-Ray format as against the HD-DVD format due to its full compatibility over all the three formats.
The company is planning to exhibit the Blu-ray disk drive at the Consumer Electronic show scheduled for this week at Las Vegas, USA. However, the product will only will be available in the second half of 2005.
Interestingly, predictions of several Hollywood and electronics giants indicated that the technology wouldn't be available before 2006. While the HD-DVD standard developed by Toshiba and Sanyo were expected to be available sooner and were also expected to be comparatively cheaper they would have less storage than Blu-ray.The Blu-ray format can store up to 50 Gigabytes of data on a single dual-layer disc, which will enable movie companies to store a full-length, high-definition movie on a single disc.
