I just bought a 80 Gig Maxtor HD
Installing the HD and clone the Disk to Disk using ghost..

All goes well .

except...

I since then using PMagic to get 2 extra partitions

My problem is..

now I cannot format the partition at all ?

reall strange..

I can format them using Pmagic to ntfs or to FAT32..

I can change the logical drive using the

dmt i.e diskmgmt.msc or pm

rename the partitions but I cannot format the drive?

The display prompt is some uitlity is using the disk.. close it and re-format again!?

Driving me nut ?I have check the service ... but which is one ?

Thanks

By any chance are you looking at a very small partition? If so its your boot information, which is normal under xp

I used Partition magic 7.02

The problem from the service module

remember the infamous viper site!

hxxp://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg750.htm

which most of us follow blindly

I did anyway at that time which I am still very green at using XP!

he recommended disable the logical drive stuff !

I did not know I can add another HD nd perform fdisk / partition under XP GUI

which is new to me ..

I normally using fdsik under w98/winme DOS option

I like to partition to 16~20G lots to recover some lost space

Have you tried Maxtor's latest MaxBlast software?

Incidently, why do you want to have multiple partitions on your drive if you're using NTSF format? Under FAT32 it's essential on very large drives, but not on NTFS formatted drives. I have an 80 gig and a 120 gig in a system that I use mainly for recording movies/programs from Cable TV, and they work great using NTFS.

To Woogieman

I always partition my HD..

I have a dual boot system..with XP on Drive D:\
and all application installed on drive E:
and all game on drive F:\ and one 20G partition for Virtual pC for testing purposes
the rest of the partitiopns for O/s on drive C:

so when I ghost image XP its on ~600M with compression..
this way if I need to format and clean install XP my applications and games data are still intact!

I have successfully getting the HD to work and at the same time corrupted my old 20G HD.. and also manage to recover the data ..

updating my BIOS fix it

Thanks everyone for the reply
