KC's MAD!
FYI - In short our local school board to save money cut art, music & PE from the K - 4th grade schools. The problem is, these classes are required by the state. The school board don't care, they feel they are above the state. Well after I addressed this issue at board meetings monthly since March 2004 as a parent & PTO member, I was getting nowhere. I recently turned to the Regional Office of Education who's job is to oversees several district superintendants including ours. They wrote a letter to the board in support of me, but did nothing. After feeling their office didn't do enough for me I went up the ladder to State Board of Education's Accountability Divison. Now the district superintendant had to listen and he's HOT!

He's so mad I received a letter in the mail dated 10/18/2004 from him (the district Superintendent Mr. Michael M. Duffy) notifying me that I am now required to call the school building principal for each building in the district prior to visiting. He said in the letter that I gave "direction to the custodian". He's full of shit! Even if I did, the punishment don't match the crime. I know this is an attack towards me for stepping forward and pursuing the issue of no art, PE and music with the state.

What I need from you guys is your moral support and/or ideas/help.

Thanks Cyberion, moral support is sometimes hard to come by. So many people are scared to speak up in a community openly, even if they agree with your views.

I have to agree with richardc2000 on this. Take it to the media - Newspapers, TV News, etc! You will see plenty of action.

You have my support KC!

its good to hear people getting envolved with there local issues. but i'd just like to through in my 2cents. I've delt with the school board quite a bit, i was pretty involved in it while i was in high school (3 years a go). I think one thing you have to understand is that they have no control over how much money they get, basicly they're handed this job where they're given a set sum of money and then supposed to run a school district with it, from my expreience its usally not even close to enough money, so then what are you supposed to do? people get mad when you cut programs from the school and don't get me wrong i think its fucked up to cut things like art, music and pe these are probably the most important programs for kids, but what else are you supposed to cut? you can't cut the basic things like reading, writing and arithmetic. is cutting teachers really better? then you just end up with huge kid/teacher ratios. I guess all i'm saying is be a little cautious before blame the schoolboard, i'm sure they didn't want to cut those programs. this is another one of the reasons that we need to start passing tax raises for schools or maybe spending less on military and more on education. anyway thats just my 2cents.

I agree completely. Even more so seeing as my state is currently number 48 out of 50. SC Think it still is. Sure it is. Dont quote me though, might be 49 again lol. Would not supprise me if were back to 50 like a decade ago i guess it was.

Though my school district is number 2 in the nation I believe. lol

Here it's all about SAT scores. Whatever school as the highest SAT scorce gets the most money. I've heared upwareds of 85% of the entire state. lol My HS Ridge Veiew I think had like 25 students make 1600, perfert score on SAT and at least 30 who came close. I made a 159x. Dont rember that last number. Missed one damn question.

Anyways yeah its pretty damn crazy.

Um get in touch with the govner. And let him/here know if she/he does not fix the problem you will not vote for he/her's next term.

And yea get it on the local news. News paper would be a good start.

Or better yet which would be pretty nice and probally get the most aditition. At least here anyways.

Um get someone to write about it in the hs news weekly or whatever. Yeah HS one since it is normally the most read by pararents and students.

That would get the school and the governers adition pretty fast I would bet and probally local news as well.

Or if u really want to get adition start watch MTV and copy some of the school branks. Legal ones. lol

Maybe u could have a super HS party. Keep it legal of course. :P

Call some peeps, local news and invite tons of people. Rent out some public place. Like a opra house or something. And then let even know about the issue. A cook out would probally bring the most people. Dont make the issue the big deal. Must be formal and inviting. Not come to this partty people cause of the issue, bla bla. Know what I mean. Yeah kinda deseving but thats how shit gets done. lol I mean still them them know of course. But even more so invite people who disagree with you. Yeap other "party" must be there or kinda pointless. Cause you want them to hear the issue at heart live not on tv or from students later. Less of an impact.

I mean just make it fun and not just the issue. Invite everyone. Not just people who care about the issue either. Cause lots of people do and you just dont know it. I mean on the flyer or whatever of course say why you are doing this but u know still. Know what I mean?

Really what u need to do is create a team if you are serious. Get together with other parents and students who feel the way you do. Make flyers, etc.

Well enough bla bal. lol :P

Well I would start by creating a team to figure out your (its) goals. How how you wish to acieve them. Might want to rent a few cummunicatons books from the library. Think that would be a great start. At least 10 people who have your goal at heart. And at least a few need to be in a postion of power. I mean people who others can relate to and the damn basteds you are trying to persudate to see your pov. And who are stong leaders and have stong communications skills.

Well good luck. Or of course you could just go legal. I mean if they dont get the classes to meat the sate standard then I'm sure they are breaking some law. You would think. Since that means your son/daughter can not advance to middle/hs. Right? I mean without having to change schools. Thats probally would be their defence so then you come back saying it would be bad of the kids mental health. Sure you can find a ton of info on that subject.

Bravo KC for launching into this. Lotta effort and sweat. Education is one of the 2-noble professions in our world (the other is health care) and it needs money, care and support from everyone.

I can't help but think the ball is being dropped at almost every level right up to the big guy in DC. I'm sure the Congress wouldn't move much to improve things, even if Kerry gets in.

More power to you. Were I near I'd come march with you.
