I just sold my 2800 amd to a good friend and I am wondering what MB and CPU to buy. I do not do very much hard gaming but work with files and video some.
So my question is what are some good suggestions for MB and CPU's and a Case

What I sold and was working great:
AMD 2800 cpu
Shuttle AK35GT2 MB (w/bios upgrade)
512DRR 400 @3200
80gig HD (WD SE)
CDRW32x Lite-On burner
DVD Drive
Mid Tower case

I kept the 3 HD I had for another computer
Lite-On dvd-cdrw burner
Lite-On 48XCDrw Burner
Ide Controller card

Suggestions please AMD 32 bit or 64 bit or Sempron
Celeron or Pent 4

Thanks

I'm not going to be any help

I would lean toward the AMD 64-bit, But the only 64 bit OS I know of is a Beta.
If you would be willing to install a beta with a 360 day License. Then Wait for
the full version. ((And we might be doing that)(in the next few weeks we'll be
putting 6 of them together))

if you go for the amd 64 you can run windows 32bit without a problem- and if you choose your MOBO carefully you can get one with a working firewall built in to it. I recently built a 64bit shuttle system for a friend and it's rapid! He had a few bios problems but the tech's at nvidia and asus (think it was asus!) bent over backwards to help him, they even wrote 6 beta bios's for him to try out and find which one worked best for him. You end up with a rapid system that will take a 32bit OS now and the 64bit OS when it's released.

@user needs I am waiting to hear more info and the good or bad news of the 64bit cpu and mobo

@Dog That is what I have been thinking but not positive yet. If you would be willing to pass along your opinion as to good or not so good mobo and cpu 64 bit.

Thanks

Are you looking at a shuttle or full size mobo? i've only built a single 64bit system, unfortunately, but that was enough to know I WANT ONE NOW!!!! lol

Here's a link to the shuttle system he bought. he bought 512 of corsair xms ram and an AMD Athlon 64bit 3200 32/64Bit CPU S754 (Newcastle Core)
Added a Pioneer 108 DVD burner and a 54x CD reader for the install.

The nFORCE firewall was soooo damn easy to configure it was unvelievable. Some of the early builds had a problem with overheating but his is steady at 52C encoding MPEG's with TMPGEnc 3.x

Code:

Thats the only 64 system i have played with but it was enough to convince me the money he paid was well spent!

For "288.963 USD" that is darn nice according to the specs, but for me I need a full case to hold everything posted above and then some. So if I understand it correct the amd 64 does not run as hot as the amd32? It must run cooler with it being so small of an area or they have got coooling and air flow figured out.

Thanks

they have the airflow and cooling sorted out the AMD64 is around 2 thirds the size of the 32bit proc and the CPU cooler takes up a lot of the internal space. they also have a pretty neat exhaust fan to clear away quite a bit more of the hot air. If you are worred about how many drives etc you can fit remember that it comes with firewire and usb 2.0 to front and back, couple that with the fact that external firewire/usb 2.0 external enclosures are dirt cheap you have a pretty easy sollution, either daisy chain firewire enclosures or buy a usb 2.0 hub and add drives that way. At present he has 2 external 120Gig firewire drives and a second external pioneer 108

Thanks DoG for the information on the 64 bit system. I like the idea of the 64 bit maybe in the future and now as well. Now to find a decent case without spending dollars for a name. No I am not being cheap just looking for my money's worth. I like the size of the thermaltake but not the swing out door and yes I have been told that is the way of the future. So it may have to do but I am still looking.

Thanks

My two cents.....by the time the software companies and any other involved parties to the 64bit platform get their s hit together, the technology might be outdated. Skip it Dude.
