Hi,
I have 2k installed and I want to dual boot with 98, does anyone know the procedure for this. I have been told this will overwrite boot.ini preventing me from dual booting..is there a workaround.
Thanks
Anarchist

You must install 98 first and do not use up the whole disk for 98, make sure you leave a unused partition. Then, install win2k and choose to install on the UNUSED PARTITION. When all is said and done you will have a dual bootable system.

Thanks for the advice fellas, what I am really looking for is a way to keep 2k on without formatting and installing 9x etc.
In short a way around all of this to put 9x on a partition without all the hassle. There must be a way to install it on a machine already running 2k.
Cheers

What I thought about doing is install 98 on a partition leaving 2k where it is, let it install and boot into 98, then edit its boot.ini manually so on reboot it will boot up 2k instead..or wouldnt this approach work?

it is possible to have 98 and 2000 in the same partition

1. install 98
2. rename program files dir to something else - program98 or similar
3. reset computer - DO NOT SHUT DOWN NORMALLY
4. install 2000, it will recognise that 98 is there and ask if you want to upgrade, answer no and insall in new dir

when all is complete boot 98, it will complain that it cannot find certain files or files are the wrong version, this is because it is looking in 'program files' for 2000, simply point it at the renamed 98 program files

2000 should boot normally

The problem is that Win-98 will always write certian files to the C drive even if you choose to install it into another partition. It will overwrite the MBR with a pointer to boot Io.sys and msdos.sys leaving you unable to boot into 2000.

Thats why 98 should be installed first to be able to use the win-2000 boot loader to choose between the two OS's.

It is possible to install 98 after 2000 or XP but it's a little more complex because you have to generate a win-98 boot.bin that will be recognized by the NT boot loader.
khauyeung made an excellent post with the procedure to do this but I'm unable to find it now, but you may want to search his posts for it.

Only other way to do it without re-installing is to use a boot manager like boot magic that will hide two primary partitions from each other but you won't be able to access those partitions from the other OS.

Best of luck,
Dave

I dont know if this will work, but here is a site explaining how to dual boot 98 and XP when XP is already installed. Might give you the general idea. Might not. Its worth a try though right? Thanks go to sd for the link.

Remember, always back up everything before you do something outrageous like this.

Use OSL 2000 from Osloader.com, by Vijay Amarnath. It works with all versions. Have been using it for 3 years .

To have a hassle free dualboot, install Win98 first and then install Win2k within Win98 and choose new installation not upgrade..
