MICROSOFT HAS has changed its mind about waiting for Longhorn before it releases the newest update of Windows Server.
The Redmond giant said it will ship an updated version of its Windows Server 2003 before the Longhorn version of the server operating system expected by 2007.
A Microsoft spokesman said it was likely that we will introduce an update to Windows Server 2003 before then.
He said that customers wanted "a more integrated and easier-to-consume delivery vehicle for technology updates to Windows Server 2003."
These are likely to include Windows SharePoint Services, Windows Rights Management Services and the Group Policy Management Console. These were released as Windows Server 2003 Feature Packs since the operating system was launched in April 2003.
It is likely to add new features and functionality to the operating system, but Microsoft is keeping quiet about these.
Microsoft has yet to decide on the packaging, and a delivery date for the update, or how much it will cost
