Here another Compilation about some REG HACK in XP

Have fun !

[b:4353809822]User Interface[/b:4353809822]

Stop showing zip files in folder list.

Whereas some folders have dozens if not hundreds of zip files, it is annoying to have them show in the left pane folder list...To work around this "compressed folder" view in XP, open Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View ... and untick "Display simple folder view in Explorer's Folders list" and click ok.

Thanks, Great and useful site!

Remove Owner colummn From Explorer's Details view to dramatically speed up display

Do you sit and wait while Explorer seems to take it's time showing the owner of each file/directory that is displayed? If so, then you might find the following useful:

1. Open Explorer and select "Details" under the "View" menu
2. Right click on any of the column headers (such as "Name", "Size", or "Owner")
3. Uncheck "Owner"

You should see immediate improvements as you navigate around.

To make this permanent for all folders,

4. Select "Folder Options" from the "Tools" menu
5. Select the "View" tab
6. Click the "Apply to All Folders" button

Now, you will not see "Owner" in any folder. If you want to re-display it, simply follow the instructions above and re-check "Owner" in step 3.

Delete Unwanted Screen Savers Loaded w/XP

If anyone else was wondering how to get rid of the annoying Screen Savers that Microsoft feels you have to have with XP they made it a little more difficult than normal.

1. Navigate to C: windowssystem32 and delete the Screen Savers you want to get rid of first.

2. Then you have to go to ¡§C:windowssystem32dllcache¡¨ you will need to cut and paste or type in your address bar to get there (WO the quotes) because it is hidden and can¡¦t be seen even if you choose to view hidden folders

3. Once there, delete the Screen Savers in that folder also (they will be named the same thing). Otherwise, you will find that they will come back no matter how many times you delete them from your system 32 folder. Voila---no more Screen Savers!!!!

?h this worked with XP pro but I am sure it is the same with other versions

Tray Icons Be Gone

Do you need to hide a program running in the background that shows in your System Tray? Try this reg hack to hide all tray icons. It?s not anything like the Windows XP tray icon hider, this one shows no trace of any icons. It would look like someone closed all background programs.

1) Click on START>RUN and type "regedit" (without the quotes).
Navigate to the following key;

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/Explorer

2) Add a "REG_DWORD" entry entitled "NoTrayItemsDisplay". Open it up and assign the Hex value of 1 to hide the Icons. The value of 0 is normal (default), showing the icons.

3) Close "regedit" and reboot computer and the icons should not be there anymore. Control Alt and Delete will bring up Windows Task Manager and items can be displayed and closed (if need be) from in there instead.

I found this hack to be very useful when covertly using telephone recording software. Now the girlfriend can be engaged in her game of SIMS? while talking on the phone and being recorded and she has no idea. lol

Use active desktop to save memory used by wallpapers

When you choose a wallpaper using the standard method (selecting a background on the desktop tab, in the properties window), Windows converts this image to a huge .bmp file (even if you selected a .jpg). Then instead of having a nice 220K wallpaper, you get a 3,15MB wallpaper. To get rid of this, try using active desktop's web capabilities, like this:

1. Right click on your desktop and select "properties", then select the "desktop" tab.
2. Click on "Customize Desktop".
3. Select the "Web" tab and click on "New..."
4. Browse for your favorite image and click OK when you are done.
5. Make sure "Lock desktop items" is uncheck.
6. Click OK, and OK again.
7. Now your image is like another window. Drag it to where you want and then right clik over it.
8. Select "arrange icons by" and the check "Lock Web Items on Desktop".
9. That's it. Now you have a "low memory usage wallpaper".

With this you can make interesting things, like using various small wallpapers, or even animated ones!! (you can select an animated .gif too!!). Simply select various images, and when you click OK, drag all them to its right location, and lock the content again.

PS: If you want to check the huge wallpaper windows makes, select a wallpaper the standard way, then browse to "Cocuments and SettingsUSER PROFILELocal SettingsApplication DataMicrosoft" (where USER PROFILE, is the profile you're using, i.e. Administrator). There should be a file called Wallpaper.bmp, open it and you'll see your cureent wallpaper.

Show CPU Meter in system tray at all times

How to show the built in CPU meter which is part of the Windows Task Manager every time you boot or switch users.

1. Do a search for taskmgr.exe
2. Right click and select Send To - Desktop (Create Shortcut)
3. On the taskmgr shortcut that is on the desktop right click and select Properties - Change the Run Command to - minimized.
4. Rename the shortcut to "Task Manager" or "CPU Meter" and right click and cut the Shortcut.
5. Paste the shortcut into the startup folder by right click on the start menu - Select All Users - Programmes - StartUp.

You should see the Meter in the system tray. If not then:

6. In the Windows Task Manager window select Options - and tick "Minimize On Use" and "Hide When Minimized".
7. Then minimize the Task Manager

Clear Unwanted Entries from Add/Remove Programs

Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT).
Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Uninstall, and remove any unwanted keys under "Uninstall."

Hide Users on the Welcome Screen

When you add an account for certain users with Windows XP, their user names will appear on the Welcome Screen. Sometimes a user needs to be added to a Windows XP machine, because he needs access (via the network) to resources on the machine, but he will not be physically logging in on the computer. You can remove his name from the Welcome Screen, while still maintaining the user account.

Start the Registry Editor
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows NT CurrentVersion Winlogon SpecialAccounts UserList
Right-click an empty space in the right pane and select New > DWORD Value
Name the new value exactly as the Username
Leave the Value data as 0

If you want to enable this user again on the Welcome Screen, either double-click the Username value, and change the Value data to 1, or delete the Username
Close the registry editor

Remove Outlook Express Splash screen

In order to remove the OE Splash screen you must edit your registry:

1. Run regedit
2. Go to the key named something like HKEY_CURRENT_USERIdentities{EC7994FF-9DB7-4854-B5F1-C3D3956DED35}SoftwareMicrosoftOutlook Express5.0
3. Add a new DWORD called "NoSplash"
4. Set it to "1"

Faster Application Access

Have you ever wanted to have your program shortcuts withing a clicks reach without crowding the desktop? And do you have to many apps to pin them all to the start menu? If so, then this might be a solution for you aswell.

1) Create a new folder anywhere you like and name it "Progz", "Gamez" or "Music" according to your will and pleasure.

2) Place shortcuts of the stuff you need into this folder.

3) Right-click on the windows tastbar and select "toolbars" and "New toolbar". Then you simply refer to your "Progz" folder.

And there you have it... all your applications within a clicks reach.... and a clean desktop aswell. I have my menues minimized, so I only see the names of the categories or folders, and then locked the taskbar, making room for the active applications to be shown.

Adding new items to the toolbar is done simply by copying or creating shortcuts into the original folder, then your menu updates itself.

This can also be a good way of organizing applications into different categories... you just make seperate toolbars.

Remove user name from Start Menu

START > RUN > GPEDIT.MSC > USER CONFIGURATION > ADMINISTRATIVE TEMPLATES > START MENU AND TASKBAR > FIND REMOVE USER NAME FROM START MENU > RIGHT CLICK PROPERTIES > CHECK ENABLED > OK

Change Start Button Text

You can change the start button by using a hex editor - see regedit.com for details how to do it.
([link]http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/791/[/link])

the offsets for XP are:

000412b6 - 000412bf
and
0004158a - 00041593

This method has a few limitations though, you can only use exactly 5 letters, so try the following method from tweakersguide.com (but it's in German so here's my rough translation)

First of all you will need to download a exe editor - Resource Hacker and Hacker 2.0 are avaliable from [link]www.downloads.com[/link] and are adequate for the task in hand.

The first 3 steps stop the file we are going to tamper with from being restored automatically when windows restarts

1) with notepad or a text editor open the file c:windowssystem32restorefilelist.xml (you might need to change it's properites from read only first by right clicking on the file and selecting properties, then remove the tich from the read only checkbox)

2) add the following line to the first section to exclude explorer.exe from the protected file list
- %windir%explorer.exe

3) save the file (and apply the read only properties back if you wish)

The next 2 steps actually modify the explorer.exe file that is the windows shell so back it up first if you are uncertain what you are doing (to back up the file, open a cmd window and type -
copy c:windowsexplorer.exe c:windowsexplorer.bak)

4) Open the file c:windowsexplorer.exe with your exe editor and edit the text in following lines

String Table > 37 > 1033
String Table > 38 > 1033

You just edit the text inside the "Start" to what ever you want and compile if necessary (depends on your exe editor - you will if you use ResHack)

5) save the file as (file > save as) explorer.xp (back up this file to another disk if you want to save a bit of hassle after you recover the machine next time)

Now you need to copy the file you've modified best way I've found to do this is to boot to safe mode command prompt although it's been suggested that you can stop the explorer.exe process with Task Manager, copy the fie in a cmd prompt then restart the process again - that worked for me but the origional returned after a restart. The next 3 steps describe how you copy the file

6) restart the machine and start tapping F8 to get the start menu - choose safe mode with command prompt

7) log on as Administrator and you'll be presented with a cmd prompt

8) To copy the modified file just type
copy c:windowsexplorer.xp c:windowsexplorer.exe
assuming that's where you saved it to with your exe editor)

9) Restart Machine and VOILA!

If anyone wants to tidy the tweak up a bit feel free.

Turn off Thumbs.db

Thumbs.db is a file which is created in a folder with Movies or Pictures so that you can view a piece of their content without actualy opening them (you can't see thumbnails unless you have the option to view system files turned on). Thumbs.db is there so that you don't need to reload a thumbnail everytime you browse that folder. Sad fact is, is Thumbs.db takes up about 2kb per file and if you edit a lot of stuff its annoying to keep seeing them popping up all over your computer. You can remove thumbs.db quite easily by following these steps:

1. Go to Run in the startmenu
2. Type gpedit.msc
3. Click OK and the Group Policy will open
4. Go to User Configuration/Administrative Template/Windows Components/Windows Explorer
5. Scroll down to the bottom of the long list of stuff that now shows up in the menu on the right. Double-Click on Turn off caching of thumbnail pictures.
6. Click on Enable then Apply, Ok. And now you no longer have this annoying problem.

Icon Folders

Now now, calm down there you tweak freak you. A pretty cool, enhancement to XP was the changing of a folder icon. Now you can coordinate your program, to the folder it is located in! Heres how:

1.) Go into Windows Explorer
2.) Choose a folder and right click it and get into its properties
3.) Now in the last tab, you can select an icon for your folder by either browsing system DLL's or choosing a variety of icons on your disk.

This tweak applies for all the organized tweakers out there, who like to keep their folders and files nice and tidy.

Happy Tweaking!

Remove Shared Doc's from My Computer

Under My Computer you will notice a new folder called shared documents. Microsoft has made it easy to share files and folders over a network by dragging icons into it. If you wish to remove this folder from My computer all you have to do is delete a key from the windows registry.

Start regedit, if you are unfamiliar with regedit please see our FAQ.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows
CurrentVersionExplorerMyComputerNameSpaceDelegateF olders.
Locate the key {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}.
Right click on it and select delete.
After a reboot is is gone!

Tricking WinXP to use larger then 32GB FAT32 Partitions

I have found a way to trick WinXP into using Partitions bigger then 32GB. I have been using a 60GB Fat32 partition on WinXP for over 4 months now and I haven't had a single problem. This is how you do it.

1 get a Win98 boot disk
2 boot from boot disk and run Fdisk
3 partition the drive to what size you want up to 120GB
4 reboot the computer off of the Win98 boot disk
5 format the drive
6 boot the computer off of the WinXP CD
7 proceed to install the WinXP.
8 When WinXP ask you what partition to install to choose the disk you just formated it will give you an several option dealing with NTFS don't pay them any mind and choose the last option which is to install WinXP to current drive without making any changes. WinXp will proceed to install normally and you will have WinXP installed to a fully functional FAT32 Partition greater then 32GB. WinXP can use larger then 32GB partitions M$ intentionally limited the Fdisk portion WinXP to push people to the Realm of NTFS.

Sutdown XP faster 1

Like previous versions of windows, it takes long time to restart or shutdown windows xp when the "Exit Windows" sound is enabled. to solve this problem you must disable this useless sound.

click start button then go to settings -> control panel -> Sound,Speech and Audio devices -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Sounds, then under program events and windows menu click on "Exit Windows" sub-menu and highlight it.now from sounds you can select, choose "none" and then click apply and ok.
now you can see some improvements when shutting down your system.

Shutdown XP Faster 2

When a user shuts down Windows XP, first the system has to kill all services currently running. Every once in a while the service does not shut down instantly and windows gives it a change to shut down on its own before it kills it. This amount of time that windows waits is stored in the system registry. If you modify this setting, then windows will kill the service earlier. To modify the setting, follow the directions below:

Start Regedit.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control.
Click on the "Control" Folder.
Select "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"
Right click on it and select Modify.
Set it a value lower than 2000 (Mine is set to 200

Easily Disable Messenger

Go into: C:/Program Files/Messenger. Rename the Messenger folder to "MessengerOFF" This does not slow down Outlook Express or hinder system performance.

Increase speed by tweaking prefetcher settings

This is an unique technique for XP, which could improve the performance significantly by tweaking the prefetcher. Recommended hardware: PIII 800 or higher, 512M RAM or more.

1. run "regedit";
2. goto [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSe ssion ManagerMemory ManagementPrefetchParametersEnablePrefetcher];
3. Set the value to either 0-Disable, 1-App launch prefetch, 2-Boot Prefetch, 3-Both ("3" is recommended).
4. reboot.

It will decrease the boot time but double and increase the performance of your XP. Try it!

Turn off Indexing to speed up XP

Windows XP keeps a record of all files on the hard disk so when you do a search on the hard drive it is faster. There is a downside to this and because the computer has to index all files, it will slow down normal file commands like open, close, etc. If you do not do a whole lot of searches on your hard drive then I suggest turnning this feature off:

1. Open my computer
2. Right click your hard drive icon and select properties.
3. At the bottom of the window you'll see "Allow indexing service to index this disk for faster searches," uncheck this and click ok.
4. A new window will pop up and select apply to all folders and subfolders. It will take a minute or two for the changes to take affect but then you should enjoy slightly faster performance.

Clean your prefetch to improve performance.

This is an unique technique for WinXP. We know that it is necessary to wash registry and TEMP files for Win9X/ME/2000 periodly. Prefetch is a new and very useful technique in Windows XP. However, after using XP some time, the prefetch directory can get full of junk and obsolete links in the Prefetch catalog, which can slow down your computer notablely. My suggestion is: open C(system drive):/windows/prefetch, delete those junk and obsolete files, reboot. It is recommended that you do this every month.

Remove hibernation file

If you do not use hibernation, make sure you do not have it enabled, which reserves disk space equal to your RAM. If you have a hidden file on the root directory of your C-drive called hiberfil.sys, hibernation is enabled. To remove that file, go to Control Panel, select Performance and Maintenance, Power Options, Hibernate tab, and uncheck the Enable hibernation box.

Improve NTFS Performance

The NTFS file system is the recommended file system because of its advantages in terms of reliability and security and because it is required for large drive sizes. However, these advantages come with some overhead. You can modify some functionality to improve NTFS performance as follows:

1. Disable creation of short names. By default, NTFS generates the style of file name that consists of eight characters, followed by a period and a three-character extension for compatibility with MS-DOS and Microsoft® Windows® 3.x clients. If you are not supporting these types of clients, you can turn off this setting by changing the default value of the NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation registry entry (in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlFi lesystem) to 1.

2. Disable last access update. By default NTFS updates the date and time stamp of the last access on directories whenever it traverses the directory. For a large NTFS volume, this update process can slow performance. To disable automatic updating, change the value of the NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate registry entry (in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentContolSetControlFil esystem) to 1. If the entry is not already present in the registry, add it before setting the value. (Add it as a REG_DWORD)

3. Reserve appropriate space for the master file table. Add the NtfsMftZoneReservation entry to the registry as a REG_DWORD in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlFi leSystem. When you add this entry to the registry, the system reserves space on the volume for the master file table. Reserving space in this manner allows the master file table to grow optimally. If your NTFS volumes generally contain relatively few files that are typically large, set value of this registry entry to 1 (the default). Typically you can use a value of 2 or 3 for moderate numbers of files, and 4 (the maximum) if your volumes tend to contain a relatively large number of files. However, be sure to test any settings greater than 2 because these higher values cause the system to reserve a much larger portion of the disk for the master file table.

Reboot after making changes.

Unload .dll's to Free Memory

Windows Explorer caches DLLs (Dynamic-Link Libraries) in memory for a period of time after the application using them has been closed. This can be an inefficient use of memory.

1. Find the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionExplorer].
2. Create a new DWORD sub-key named 'AlwaysUnloadDLL' and set the default value to equal '1' to disable Windows caching the DLL in memory.
3. Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

I tried this after running a intense program, then watched the task manager; memory recovered it self.

Disable unnecessary programs

Installing many programs on you computer can often clutter your registry with unnecessary programs running when your computer starts up. This will slow down your machine and take up memory.

Start Regedit. If you are unfamiliar with regedit please refer to our FAQ on how to get started.
Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionRun
Once there, locate any entry's on the right. You can identify the program by the path to the executable. Find programs that you can live without starting up from the list.
Right click on them and select Delete
You may also want to navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionRunonce and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionRun.
Delete unnecessary programs.
Reboot your computer.

Fix for slow loading of Outlook Express when Messenger is disabled

This is just a clarification of the french guy's tweak.

Open up Register Editor by running "regedit" command. Click on "Edit" and select "Find". Copy and paste FB7199AB-79BF-11D2-8D94-0000F875C541 onto the "Find what" box and click on "Find Next". Once found, click on the plus sign in front of it and you will find InProc32 and LocalServer32. Select one of them then right click on default under the name column and select "modify", then simply delete what's in the Value Data box. Repeat for the other.

Completely disable Universal Plug and Play (UPnP)

To completely disable the potentially dangerous UPnP service from Windows XP, there are two services present that should be disabled. You can access the Services panel through Administrative Tools (Control Panel>>Performance and Maintenance). The two services you need to disable are:

Universal Plug and Play Device Host

AND

SSDP Discovery Service

Most users don't realize it, but the SSDP service is the actual server that's open to the internet (unless you're firewalled), and the service that turns on the UPnP Device Host. Disable the UPnP Device Host first by double-clicking on the service and selecting "Disabled" in the drop-down menu, instead of the default "Manual." Next, go on to the SSDP Discovery Service, double-click and select to stop the service, then disable it in the same manner.

I hope this helps anyone who might be confused about how to be rid of UPnP.

If you use mIRC then you have noticed that the Ident requests do not get answered and mIRC will only connect to servers that do not require Ident. This is due to the built in "Internet Connection Firewall" in XP. Here is how to get it working without disabling the entire firewall:

1. Go into Control Panel-> Network Connections
2. Right click "Local Area Network" and select "Properties"
3. Left click the advanced tab
4. Left click the settings button
5. Under services, left click the add button
6. For description type "Ident", for Name of IP put the name that identifies your system with your ISP OR your IP if it is static.
7. Both external and internal ports are 113 by default and TCP.
8. Click OK all the way out.

[b:5a8eee7060][color=purple:5a8eee7060]Appz tweak[/color:5a8eee7060] [/b:5a8eee7060]

Nero Burning Rom

This is not really a tweak but it does make using Nero under XP quite different and in some cases, better. If you use Nero 5.5.8.2 give this a try. It is better to use in some ways.

Here's a bit of interesting info: Nero is apparently also Nero Express or the vice versa. If you have the newest version of Nero (5.5.8.2) all you have to do is change the target path on the shortcut from: "C:Program FilesaheadNero Nero.exe" to "C:Program FilesaheadNeroNero.exe" /w and bingo instant enhanced GUI of Nero Express.

Outlook 2002: Minimize to System Tray

Like most applications Outlook 2002 (from Office XP) will normally minimize to the taskbar. This tweak changes the default behaviour so that it will minimize to the system tray (next to the clock) instead.

1.Open your registry (Click on Start->Run and type regedit and press OK) and find the key below. You may need to create the key if it does not already exist.

2.Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called 'MinToTray' and edit the value according to the settings below.

3.Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.

Settings
Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice10.0Outloo kPreferences]
Value Name: MinToTray
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (1 = System Tray, 0 = Taskbar)

Note: Backup your registry before you try this tweak or any other tweak that makes use of the registry. Changing the values in the registry might cause serious problems.

No more ICQ banners

To remove those annoying, flashing banners at the bottom of ICQ.
Simply open the ICQ folder with windows explorer. C:Program FilesICQ
Delete the file "ICQHttp.dll"
Do not delete "ICQHttp .dll" (note the space)
Re-start ICQ and --**no banners**-- ;-)

Made mIRC dcc send work

If you use mIRC and windows xp firewall, you have noticed that dcc send won't work. Here is how to get it working without disabling the entire firewall :

1. First you must limit the range of port that mirc use in the Dcc, Option menu. In DCC ports , set both at 1024.
2. After, go into control panel & network connections
2. Right click on your connection and select 'properties'
3. Left click the advanced tab
4. Left click the settings button
5. Under services, left click the add button
6. For description type "DCC", for Name of IP put the name that identifies your system with your ISP OR your IP if it is static.
7. Both external and internal ports are 1024 by default and TCP.
8. Click OK and restart
