Toby's vote
New Zealand's electoral office has asked police to look into how a South Island man enrolled his dog to vote prior to last weekend's general
election.
Peter Rhodes from the town of Wanaka has revealed that he successfully registered his jack russell terrier, Toby, on the electoral roll.
Mr Rhodes says he registered the dog under the name, Toby Russel Rhodes, listing his occupation as "rodent exterminator".
He says he expected the application would be rejected and the fact that it was not highlights a need for the electoral roll system to be more closely
scrutinised.
The manager of New Zealand's Electoral Enrolment Centre is disputing some of Mr Rhodes's story and has referred the matter to police.
Mr Rhodes insists he did not use Toby's vote on election day and nor did Toby make an appearance at the polling booths.
