I wanted to try Redhat Linux again so I downloaded it, but when I boot the cd it comes up with the linux screen saying press enter to install so I press enter and it loads a lot of stuff but then it stops and says

Code:
RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0 Crc error<6>Freeing initrd memory 2640k freed VFS: Cannot open root device "" or 48:05 Please append a correct "root=" boot option Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 48:05
and the capslock and scroll lock lights flash

I have tried downloading the iso 4 times now from 4 different locations but get the same message every time and even tried installing on a different machine and got the same message.

I searched for similar errors and tried various switches but still always get the same message

Mandrake installs properly

Any ideas please

Thanks

According to the error message it sounds like a memory problem.

Try the memtest86 program from
Code:
http://www.memtest86.com/#download
They are may be other reasons, hopefully explained in later posts.

You may want to try reburning it at 1x or 2x or try different media.

Thanks

I think the problem is that the kernel can't find the root partition because somebody at Redhat screwed up the boot config. I have no idea how to fix this though.

I had the same error, too. I tried to install Redhat 7.1, 9.0 Enterprise Wsk 3.0, but I get the same error as you. Then I logged in to the BIOS and set every features to DISABLED. After restarting the computer there were no errors at the installation progress. Then I logged in to the BIOS again, and begin the ENABLE the features again. It seem I had problem with the Printer Port Interrupt. I set it to AUTO, and now everything works fine.
