Check it Yall, I am going to Fry's tonight to buy some pc upgrades(256mb ram, 16x dvd rom, and a video card). I have noticed that some people have experienced problems with video card drivers in xp. I am running 2535, and was wondering what would be the best video card to pick up. ATi, or GForce, 32 versus 64. SDR, or DDR??

Here is a peek at my stsem:
Gateway Tower
700mhz athlon
Jabil Motherboard (200mb fsb, 2x agp slot, amd 751 northgate bridge)
10 gig fujitsu, 30 gig western digital--both 5400
8mb tnt2 nvidia video card
8x philips writer
256 mb pc100 sdram

Any help would definitly be appreciated

Go with the ATi Radeon 64Meg DDR VIVO. It's pretty cheap now and I haven't had any major problems running with XP 2535. If you can wait until September however, wait for the Radeon 8500 to be released.

if you are going for a cheap but high performance card get the "Radeon SE"
it's basically a Radeon 64 DDR buth with faster RAM

I've seen them go for $135
very inexpensive for such a high quality card
it also has partial DirectX 8 Support while GeForce 2 only has DirectX 7
it has full OpenGL 1.2 support

and if you like to look at he nice new GUI they way it was meant to be seen I suggest you go with ATi
best damn image quality in 2d and 3d
(except for matrox and voodoo but then again, how well do they perform )

Plus, it includes many features that the GF2 doesn't have (EMBM, 3D texturing, 3 textures/single pass, etc.). You'll definitely get what you pay for.

But, if you buy a Radeon, don't plan on seeing any decent fogging effects. Fogging sucks on the Radeon, or any ATI card for that matter.

I think the fogging can be corrected with just a few simple registry keys

Last I looked it couldn't. All I saw was a petition on rage3d or 3drage, whatever it's called, petitioning ATI to make the fogging better, because it was years behind the competition.

I speak from experience. I own a Radeon and sometimes wish I would have bought something else.

I also own a GeForce2 GTS and it most certainly does have full support of DirectX 8

misinformed:
the radeon fog works just fine it has one problem
it cn't do tablefog

the thing is that tablefog is not the developers choice
I can count the games that use it one the fingers on one of my hands

it has a problem with smoke in CS though
but this seems limited to CS
I read why it's like that and Valve actually confessed that it was due to bad programming on their side, not bad drivers/hardware from ATi's side

the problem with table fog: it doesn't show at all
CS smoke problem: fps gets cut in half: but since CS fps on a Radeon is 99 all the time, I think I can live with it dropping to 60 sometimes
especially since CS doesn't look so damn good on any other card you'll find ever

Well, I'm just speaking of my personal experience. I have both cards and I enjoy the GeForce more than I do the ATI.

In some of the games I have, I had to disable fogging all together to even get it to run.

Make your own decision on this, and do research, don't take our words for it, because we are just going to agree to disagree.
