In hopes of raising general awareness of its role as a handler of much of the traffic that makes the World Wide Web possible, Akamai Technologies has created a news usage index that shows when and where people are accessing online news sources all over the globe.
The index, which is named the Akamai Net Usage Index, will be a free resource that updates every five minutes, and will show data that relates to more than 100 news sites, which Akamai handles traffic flows. The information will be useful for media companies, and those interested in how news spreads online.
"We absolutely have the ability to deliver a more comprehensive view of how news is consumed on the Internet," said Akamai Chief Marketing Officer, Lisa Arthur in a statement. "There are a lot of statistics out there about the declining viewership of networks news, the decline of print news and the increased use by the public of the Internet as a source of news."
Akamai handles between 10 and 20 percent of all non-e-mail global internet traffic, delivering about 1 billion page views per day.
