I've received three e-mail messages recently that look like the "message undeliverable" error message you get when you send to a wrong e-mail addy. None of the addresses look even slightly familiar, and they all have ATT***.DAT attachments. Wondering if anyone else has seen this?

Oh, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Yes always. But I have since told my ISP and they have now blocked all fake return e-mails. And have not had a single one since.

Just just notify your isp and they should take care of it. Seeing as if its like you think it is, then its illegal. So I was told. Plus I would imagine it would be either way.

Had quite a few of them (Toooooooooo damn many to count really!), just delete them if you don't know who they are from.

Did not work for me as I just got more and more. And of course from a different e-mail address and different subject. So got through spam filters.

They're getting pretty tricky, even using 'leet' speak to get by spam filtering. I just add them to the blocked senders list.

It's quite common that spammers will send emails, with fake, random, "from" addresses, which they may have in their list. Many of the "to" addresses they try to spam, will not exist. This means the messages will get bounced. As the email was spoofed to make it look like you sent it, all the bounces will go to your account. The .DAT attachment is harmless, it is just a raw copy of the original message.

I'm getting about a hundred spam emails a day

Some have @microsoft.com extensions saying "patch windows now" with an attached exe which is a virus, before you get infected. How is this possible?

And some are from paypal @paypal.com saying I have to enter my user id and password in the boxes in a reply or they will terminate my account and loads of others that get past the spam filters by using $ instead of S and @ instead of a.

Is spam really that effective for advertising?

Hey There!

Just make it a rule of thumb that you do not respond to anything that comes in the email wanting your account information, wanting you to install updates/patches and requesting information. They're all bogus! Real service providers always distribute their requests for information through their websites directly at you when you log in to their services.

I work for a major ISP in Australia and I get to to deal with these sorts of things all the time on a dialy basis. I find it is very easy to be able to fake those emails that are sent with your address as the From Address to bogus email addresses with unsafe attachments in them and that is how you get those fake bounced emails from mail servers that could trick you into opening the attachments and thus dropping your guard and getting infected/attacked.

Be Aware is all I can say!

Kind Regards,

The Magic Monkey h34r:" class="inlineimg" />
