I think.....

does anybody know how to set the clock of a linux machine over the shell?

You can use ntpdate <time server> to sync with a atomic clock. Or just use date -s MMDDhhmm. but I suggest ntpdate which is the best way to do this.

You must have ntp installed to do this. The date command is installed as default on all distros (I think).
