I was going to put a 40gb hd into my system but read that it didn't support hds over 30gb without a disk utility. It is a seagate hd. I went to their website and dl disk manager but that didn't install, so it didn't fisk the problem. Can anyone help me? I really need this hd, I ran out of room on my 20. thanks.

What kind of motherboard do you have(model)?

Have you updated to the latest bios version on it?

Download the latest bios for your Mobo and then Try flashing your bios. This should normally work and support HD's upto 75 Gigs.

While u r getting the new version of your bios. Also get the same one your running now. Just in case the new 1 does not like your hardware. That way u can always get things back to normal. I found out the hard way.

Just my 2 cents.

My friend had the same problem !
When your Mobo is more than 2 years old, there will probably no more Bios updates !!
If you have an Award bios, and you flash it,
it is possible to backup your Old bios

Flashing is dangerous!

If you don't know what you are doing, I would spend the 5-10 bucks and get a tech to do it for you....and sometimes they will let you watch how its done so you can do it yourself nextime. I learned the hard way, but luckly i found another identical board with original bios and was able to jump the board I screwed up.

Well the computer shop couldn't do the job either. I just got it back home and found some info that said to set the jumper on pins 1&2 to limit the 40gb to 32gb. It found the drive and booted into windows. Under windows it says its 38162.1mb so I guess it worked. About to format and will be serving some stuff this week. Thanks for all your help.

ok I have another question about this hard drive. Currently I have my 40gb set as slave and nothing set as master. My question is about the jumper settings. pins 7&8 = master, slave = no jumpers, 7&8 & 5&6 = master w/non ATA compatible slave, 5&6 = cable select, and 1&2 = limit drive capacity 40gb equals 32gb. I know that I have to leave the jumper on pins 1&2, but can i also put a jumper on pins 7&8 so it is set to master? Or can I just set my 20gb to slave and leave my 40gb on pins 1&2 to limit drive capacity? thanks.
