Thanks
Tokar for the heads up in BPN.
Microsoft's steps to refuse access to updated versions of Windows has been foiled by hackers.
This week, Microsoft started requiring users to verifiy their serial number before using Windows Update. This effort to force users to either buy XP or tell them where you got the illegal copy is called 'Genuine Advantage.' Microsoft had decided those who wanted Windows updates, other than security improvements, had to download an Active X program that sniffed their operating system to see if their OS had been pirated.
The system was cracked in 24 hours, using a simple JavaScript command that the user can enter into their Internet Explorer address bar. If entered before choosing Express or Custom on the main Windows Update screen, the entire verification system is bypassed.
Edit: Neowin Coderator Timdorr has also found that if you install the ActiveX and then disable it under Manage Addons it works without prompting for verification. Try again Microsoft.
